3 Cases of Virus Associated Hemophagocytic Syndrome

Abstract

Virus associated hemophagocytic syndrome is characterized by a benign generalized histiocytic proliferation with marked hemophagocytosis associated with systemic viral infection. The syndrome is a non-neoplastic; potentially reversible process and manifested fever; severe constitutional symptoms; hepatosplenomegaly; and lymphadenopathy; and characterized by laboratory findings of pancytopenia; hemophagocytosis and abnormal liver function test and coagulopathy. Immunosuppressive and cytotoxic therapy are contraindicated because of increasing risk of fatal out?come. The authors experienced three cases of virus associated hemophagocytic syndrome diagnosed by clinical features; bone marrow aspiration and lymph node biopsy. All cases had high fever; hepatosplenomegaly and lymphoadenopathy and showed granulocytopenia in peripheral blood and phagocytized histiocytes in bone marrow. The brief review of the literatures was made.
