Abstract |
Actinomycosis is a chronic;
progressive; suppurative disease characterized by formation of multiple abscesses; draining sinuses; abundant granulation and dense fibrous tissue. Pelvic actinomycosis is being reported with increasing frequency in association with intrauterine contraceptive devices; and the most common organism is Actinomyces israelii found endogenously in the human oral cavity; upper gastrointestinal tract and lower female genital tract. The appearance of sulfur granules in the lesions; sinus walls or discharges of involved tissue is characteristic finding; The changes created by actinomycosis can masquerade as a malignant process that is very difficult to differentiate; often requiring surgical intervention with resection.
We experienced a case of pelvic actinomycosis associated with an intrauterine contraceptive device and present the case with brief review of literature.
